Dad’s Sunday Sauce
A slow-simmered kitchen story inspired by the sauce I learned from my dad.
This video is a small kitchen story — one that begins with memory as much as it does with ingredients.
When I was little, my dad would keep a giant pot of sauce on the stove, simmering for what felt like all day. The whole house would fill with the smell of tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and dinner on its way.
Years later, when I had a place of my own, I began making a smaller pot for myself on Sundays. Sometimes I shared it with friends. Sometimes it was just me, a loaf of crusty bread, and a glass of Chianti.
This is not the fussy version of red sauce, and it certainly isn’t the Food Network version. It’s the old-school way I learned it — simple ingredients, a little patience, and a lot of stirring.
Ground meat, onions, garlic, herbs, and whatever tomatoes you have on hand can become something deeply comforting when given time on the stove.
Watch the full video below, and if it reminds you of someone’s kitchen you grew up in, I’d love to hear about it.
Simple ingredients.
A little patience.
And a lot of stirring.
Buon appetito.
