A Sunny Easter Morning | Hot Cross Buns & A Spring Brunch Table

Inspired by a mid-century Better Homes & Gardens breakfast spread, this table leans into ease and quiet beauty—fresh fruit and citrus, soft eggs simply prepared, warm breads with butter, and tea or juice shared in unhurried conversation. At the center of it all, a simple offering that feels both nostalgic and timeless: ✨ Hot Cross Buns.

A vintage styled Easter morning table — soft colors, fresh fruit, and the quiet beginning of a spring day.

A Morning That Welcomes Spring

Easter morning begins quietly — before the table is filled, before the day gathers its energy. There is a softness to it, a sense of beginning again. In this vintage breakfast spread, simple dishes are arranged with care: fresh fruit, warm eggs, delicate breads, and coffee poured slowly into waiting cups.

The colors echo the season — pale greens, gentle yellows, and the first blooms of spring. Nothing is overly complicated. Instead, the beauty is found in balance: something warm, something fresh, something sweet.

It is a meal meant not to impress, but to welcome — a quiet celebration before the day unfolds.

From the Archives — An Easter Table

A glimpse into a mid-century Easter spread — where hams were glazed with care, salads were shaped into baskets, and the table marked the quiet arrival of spring.

This vintage Easter feature reflects a time when holiday meals were as much about presentation as they were about nourishment. Crisp salad baskets, diamond-scored hams, and thoughtfully arranged buffet tables created a sense of occasion — a celebration of renewal, beauty, and gathering.

The ham, often the centerpiece, was prepared with simple technique and finished with a glossy marmalade glaze. Around it, delicate accompaniments — asparagus, new potatoes, and fresh greens — welcomed the season with lightness and color.

Even the smallest details — a carved carrot “marigold,” a carefully tied roast — remind us that these meals were made with intention, meant to be shared and remembered.

✨ Recipe Description

Soft, lightly spiced, and studded with dried fruit, hot cross buns are one of Easter’s most beloved traditions. These tender yeast rolls are gently sweet, enriched with butter and eggs, and finished with their signature cross—a simple marking that has carried meaning through generations.

Served warm with butter or jam, they are best enjoyed slowly, with a cup of tea and the quiet feeling of a new season beginning.

🧾 Ingredients

Dough
3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
½ cup warm milk (110°F)
¼ cup warm water
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
¾ cup dried currants or raisins
¼ cup chopped candied orange peel (optional)

Cross (Paste)
½ cup flour
5–6 tbsp water

Glaze
2 tbsp apricot jam (or honey)
1 tbsp warm water

🍞 Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, water, and a pinch of sugar. Sprinkle in the yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make the Dough
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs. Mix until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Gently knead in the dried fruit and peel.

4. First Rise
Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled.

5. Shape the Buns
Divide into 12 equal pieces and shape into smooth rounds. Place in a buttered baking dish, slightly touching. Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.

6. Add the Cross
Mix flour and water into a paste and pipe a cross over each bun.

7. Bake
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 18–22 minutes, until golden.

8. Glaze
Warm jam with water and brush over buns while still warm for a soft, glossy finish.

✨ Notes

Best served warm with butter or jam.
Dough can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight.
Substitute orange zest for peel for a lighter flavor.
Traditionally served on Good Friday, but beloved all Easter weekend.

A note from Bianca — There’s something about an early holiday morning that feels untouched, as if the day hasn’t quite decided what it will become. This is the table I imagine in that quiet space — sunlight just beginning, coffee warming in the cup, and the soft feeling that something gentle is about to unfold.
